The View

the view from here is not the prettiest
like one of those cheap hotel rooms
with no sea view or rolling hillscape
just brick wall and brimming bins

the view behind is of wet streets
all dark and damp with all those tears
where lost souls lurch, self-medicated
to try and block out all the pain

the view to come is so much better
it’s just around the corner
and if you lean right out and twist your neck just so
you’ll see it there, all full of promise

we’ll step out there together
and stand hands held and hoping
the view will be spectacular
with you there by my side
