my blood
is not good enough
not red enough
and I wonder
should I snack
on iron filings
lick railings as I pass
or listen to
Iron Maiden
to make it
donation worthy
as I sit fraudulently
with my tea and biscuit

if you are in Wales and aren’t so lacking in iron as me, please visit to see when the donation sessions are in your area

  1. Popular in many places (and very popular in Scotland in particular) we have a fizzy rink called IRUN BREW. The slogan the advertising boys used was ‘made from Iron Girders’. Well it did have a high iron content and apart from actually tasting good was supposed to do you good! After a century of advertising the girders Advertising Standards came into play and the girders had to be removed from the slogan. Perhaps a few bottles of the elixir will help.

    Love the poems. Best wishes

    1. Thanks David, I hadn’t thought of that – I will definitely give it a go. I don’t think I’ve ever actually tried it – hope it tastes better than licking railings πŸ™‚

      1. It is actually refreshing….best on hot days (please note: I have absolutely no connection with the makers) and is also more sociably acceptable than licking railings!!!

    1. I would have been happy if that were true but sadly I have failed the last 3 times I tried too 😦 Maybe next time I will succeed! I used to give blood every six months with no trouble :-/

      1. 😦 I gave blood too often and ended up with low blood pressure so couldn’t give for a while and now with the tablets I definitely can’t … unless we people want auto pain killer haha

      2. Might be useful for some patients who need pain killers and blood πŸ™‚ It’s frustrating isn’t it, when you want to do your bit, but can’t. Ah well at least we have given some in the past so that’s good πŸ™‚

      3. Woohoo πŸ™‚ It’s a skill I have. Making people happy.

I was given an extra pin thanking me for what I did give. I was happy with it. I could say that I did something for people. I have a phobia of needles, but after I saw my mum after having a brain tumour removed, I decided I should

  2. I had a similar issue years ago and they had me take iron supplements… however i’ve found what works better for me is to eat high-iron content foods…like Spinach (yum). There are lists of these available all over the internet so I will not bore you here…lol.

And more importantly…you attempted to give blood which many don’t so you deserve to be commended for that.

And even more importantly…getting back to your poem…You should listen to Iron Maiden (may i suggest “Run to the Hills”}…a little of that kind of metal never hurt anyone!

    1. Thanks for your ideas, Melanie. I’m not keen on the supplements – had to have them years ago when pregnant and they didn’t really agree with me! Next time I will make sure to prepare with spinach, red meat, dark chocolate and Irn Bru (from all the comments!) and listen to Run to the Hills at the same time πŸ˜€
