Benefits of Meadow Grass

If you let your grass grow tall into a beautiful meadow, you get this reward at this time of year … Soldier Beetles everywhere.

I think it is their time to get out and about and find a mate, and since we let the grass grow tall in the back garden, they are in their element, and there are many, many more than we saw here last year!

  1. All good things do come to an end. 3 meadows I walk regularly have been for weeks now a haven for Butterflies, Moths and innumerable insects I could never name…the birds have also enjoyed the feast for their young yet the numbers of insects never seem any the less. The farmer has just made hay, and gone till next year this cosy home for so many. Just hope the grasses and meadow flowers had time to set their seed for next year prior to the annual massacre!

    1. It does seem like a massacre doesn’t it. We get frowned at by the neighbours for letting the grass grow but I’m being a rebel!

  2. Some of the grassy areas near us that were left as lovely ‘meadows’ this last two years have been cut down early by our apparently-cash-strapped council this year!
… but we still see plenty of soldier beetles and butterflies and all kinds of interesting insectlife along the grassy verges in the woods 🙂

    1. Yeah it’s crazy how they can afford to cut grass when they’re supposedly so poor! I’m sure there are more important things they should be spending money on!
